Torment of the Grave & Muhammad:-

Muhammad was a very superstitious person. He believed in the 'evil eye' and was easily influenced by Jewish beliefs, traditions and fetishes as shown repeatedly in the Quran and the Ahadith.

His fear from the alleged torment of the grave started only after he had heard a Jewess mention it. This fear became a fearful obsession with him till the moment he died as indicated in the Ahadith.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.454        Narrated byMasruq
'Aisha said that a Jewess came to her and mentioned the punishment in the grave, saying to her, "May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave." 'Aisha then asked Allah's Apostle about the punishment of the grave. He said, "Yes, (there is) punishment in the grave." 'Aisha added, "After that I never saw Allah's Apostle but seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave in every prayer he prayed."

Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 1212        Narrated byAisha
The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered my house when a Jewess was with me and she was saying: Do you know that you would be put to trial in the grave? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) trembled (on hearing this) and said: It is the Jews only who would be put to trial.

Aisha said: We passed some nights and then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Do you know that it has been revealed to me: "You would be put to trial in the grave"?

Aisha said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) seeking refuge from the torment of the grave after this.

*** These Hadiths in fact represent Muhammad's first encounter with the idea that there may be an actual punishment in the grave.

From this point on, till the last day of his life, Muhammad was convinced as well as was terrified of this certainty as shown by only some of the following most incredibly ILLOGICAL, MYTHICAL, IGNORANT and STUPID Hadiths regarding  this subject ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.86        Narrated byAsma
I came to 'Aisha while she was praying, and said to her, "What has happened to the people?" She pointed out towards the sky. (I looked towards the mosque), and saw the people offering the prayer. 'Aisha said, "Subhan Allah." I said to her, "Is there a sign?" She nodded with her head meaning, "Yes." I, too, then stood (for the prayer of eclipse) till I became (nearly) unconscious and later on I poured water on my head. After the prayer, the Prophet praised and glorified Allah and then said,

"Just now at this place I have seen what I have never seen before, including Paradise and Hell. No doubt it has been inspired to me that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Masiah-ad-Dajjal or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure which expression Asma' used). You will be asked, 'What do you know about this man (the Prophet Muhammad)?' Then the faithful believer (or Asma' said a similar word) will reply, 'He is Muhammad Allah's Apostle who had come to us with clear evidences and guidance and so we accepted his teachings and followed him. And he is Muhammad.' And he will repeat it thrice. Then the angels will say to him, 'Sleep in peace as we have come to know that you were a faithful believer.' On the other hand, a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know, but I heard the people saying something and so I said it.' (the same). "

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.184        Narrated byAsma bint Abu Bakr
I came to 'Aisha the wife of the Prophet during the solar eclipse. The people were standing and offering the prayer and she was also praying. I asked her, "What is wrong with the people?" She beckoned with her hand towards the sky and said, "Subhan Allah." I asked her, "Is there a sign?" She pointed out, "Yes." So I, too, stood for the prayer till I fell unconscious and later on I poured water on my head.

After the prayer, Allah's Apostle praised and glorified Allah and said, "Just now I have seen something which I never saw before at this place of mine, including Paradise and Hell. I have been inspired (and have understood) that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Ad-Dajjal, or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure of what Asma' said). Angels will come to every one of you and ask, 'What do you know about this man?' A believer will reply, 'He is Muhammad, Allah's Apostle , and he came to us with self-evident truth and guidance. So we accepted his teaching, believed and followed him.'   Then the angels will say to him to sleep in peace as they have come to know that he was a believer. On the other hand a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know but heard the people saying something and so I said the same.' "

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.426        Narrated byAisha
Um Salama told Allah's Apostle about a church which she had seen in Ethiopia and which was called Mariya. She told him about the pictures which she had seen in it. Allah's Apostle said, "If any righteous pious man dies amongst them, they would build a place of worship at his grave and make these pictures in it; they are the worst creatures in the sight of Allah."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.376        Narrated byAisha
(the wife of the Prophet) Once Allah's Apostle passed by (the grave of) a Jewess whose relatives were weeping over her. He said, "They are weeping over her and she is being tortured in her grave."

*** How could a dead person be tormented in its grave?

Is it its body that is being tormented?

How could it be tormented before being judged?

If it had been judged why is it not in Hell? ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.431        Narrated byJabir bin Abdullah
Allah's Apostle shrouded every two martyrs of Uhud in one piece of cloth and then he would ask, "Which of them knew more Qur'an?" When one of them was pointed out he would put him first in the grave. He said, "I am a witness on these." Then he ordered them to be buried with blood on their bodies. Neither did he offer their funeral prayer nor did he get them washed. (Jabir bin Abdullah added):  My father and my uncle were shrouded in one sheet.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.433        Narrated byJabir bin Abdullah
Allah's Apostle came to Abdullah bin Ubai (a hypocrite) after his death and he has been laid in his pit (grave). He ordered (that he be taken out of the grave) and he was taken out. Then he placed him on his knees and threw some of his saliva on him and clothed him in his (the Prophet's) own shirt. Allah knows better (why he did so). 'Abdullah bin Ubai had given his shirt to Al-Abbas to wear. Abu Harun said, "Allah's Apostle at that time had two shirts and the son of 'Abdullah bin Ubai said to him, 'O Allah's Apostle! Clothe my father in your shirt which has been in contact with your skin.' "  'Sufyan added, "Thus people think that the Prophet clothed 'Abdullah bin Tubal in his shirt in lieu of what he (Abdullah) had done (for Al Abbas, the Prophet's uncle.)"

*** Muhammad, with his usual acts of mercy and compassion, ordered the body of Abdullah to be taken out of its grave, contorted the body into a position of SUBMISSION and then SPAT on it, because Abdullah was among those who did not believe in him ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.456        Narrated byAnas bin Malik
Allah's Apostle said, "When (Allah's) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, 'What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad)?'  The faithful believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle.'  Then they will say to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will see both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to say about this man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say." So they will say to him, "Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Qur'an)." Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (See Hadith No. 422).

*** If the Jinns and humans cannot hear him, who else near him would hear his cry?

The reader should be reminded that in Muhammad's version of the CREATION, the JINN are a similar SPECIES to HUMANS but are INVISIBLE ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.426        Narrated byAnas
We were in the funeral procession of the daughter of Allah's Apostle and Allah's Apostle was sitting near the grave and I saw his eyes full of tears. He said, "Is there anyone amongst you who did not have sexual relations with his wife last night?" Abu Talha replied in the affirmative. And so Allah's Apostle told him to get down in her grave and he got down in her grave and buried her.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.472        Narrated byAisha
Allah's Apostle in his fatal illness said, "Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians, for they built the places of worship at the graves of their prophets." And if that had not been the case, then the Prophet's grave would have been made prominent before the people. So (the Prophet ) was afraid, or the people were afraid that his grave might be taken as a place for worship.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.814        Narrated byAnas
There was a Christian who embraced Islam and read Surat-al-Baqara and Al-Imran, and he used to write (the revelations) for the Prophet. Later on he returned to Christianity again and he used to say: "Muhammad knows nothing but what I have written for him." Then Allah caused him to die, and the people buried him, but in the morning they saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is the act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and took his body out of it because he had run away from them." They again dug the grave deeply for him, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is an act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and threw his body outside it, for he had run away from them." They dug the grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. So they believed that what had befallen him was not done by human beings and had to leave him thrown (on the ground).

*** Al Bukhari should not have included this very silly and definitely false Hadith among his collection.

In fact it is used only as a deterrent to any of Muhammad's followers who may re-think matters and decides that Muhammadan Islam is not worthy of being followed ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.78        Narrated byIbn Abbas
Allah's Apostle passed by two graves and said, "Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g., one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such-and-such evil things). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said, "It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried." (See Hadith No 215, Vol 1).

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.375        Narrated byUm Khalid bint Khalid
I heard the Prophet seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.385        Narrated bySad
Seek refuge with Allah by saying the words which the Prophet used to say while seeking refuge with Allah: "0 Allah! I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from reaching a degraded geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world and from the punishment in the grave."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.387        Narrated byAisha
The Prophet used to seek refuge with Allah (by saying), "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the affliction of the Fire and from the punishment in the Fire, and seek refuge with You from the affliction of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of wealth, and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of poverty, and seek refuge with You from the affliction of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.388        Narrated byAisha
The Prophet used to say, 'O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the affliction of the Fire, the punishment of the Fire, the affliction of the grave, the punishment of the grave, and the evil of the affliction of poverty. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the evil of the affliction of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal, O Allah! Cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from all sins as a white garment is cleansed from filth, and let there be a far away distance between me and my sins as You made the East and West far away from each other. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness, sins, and from being in debt."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 9.231        Narrated byAbu Huraira
The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till a man passes by a grave of somebody and says, 'Would that I were in his place.' "

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 134        Narrated byAbuSa'id
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There dominate ninety-nine dragons over the unbeliever in the grave. They (constantly) bite him and sting him till there comes the hour (of resurrection). (These dragons are so poisonous) that if one of them exhales on the Earth, no verdure will ever grow upon it.
Reported by Darimi, Tirmidhi transmitted something similar but he said seventy instead of ninety-nine.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 136        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar
Allah's Messenger (Peace and blessings of Allah) said: This (Sa'd), for whom the Throne (of Allah) was stirred and there were opened for him the doors of Heaven and seventy thousand angels participated (in his funeral prayer),  (his grave) was compressed and later on it was expanded for him.
Transmitted by Nasa'i.

*** By any measure of  logic and or religious belief, this statement is utterly  BLASPHEMOUS since it beggars belief that the Throne of the Almighty would SHAKE or SHUDDER for the death of a mere MORTAL no matter who that mortal may be ***

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 138        Narrated byJabir ibn Abdullah
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When the dead body is buried in the grave there is presented before him (the scene of) the setting sun. He then sits down and rubs his eyes and he says: Leave me so that I may observe my prayer.
Transmitted by Ibn Majah.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1367        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr
Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Any Muslim who dies on Friday or on Thursday night will be protected by Allah from the testing in the grave."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a gharib tradition whose isnad is not fully connected.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1573        Narrated bySulayman ibn Surad
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who dies of an internal trouble will not be punished in his grave."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a gharib tradition.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1595        Narrated byAbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who dies of an illness dies as a martyr, or he will be guarded from the trial in the grave, and will have his provision brought him morning and evening from Paradise."
Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1705        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was lowered gently into the grave head first.
Shafi'i transmitted it.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1708        Narrated byMuhammad al-Baqar
Al-Baqar told in mursal form on his father's authority that the Prophet cast three handfuls of earth on the dead with both hands, that he sprinkled water on the grave of his son Ibrahim, and that he put small pebbles on it.
It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah, and Shafi'i transmitted from "he sprinkled."

*** This is copied from the traditions of the JEWS ***

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1720        Narrated byAbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) prayed over a bier, then went to the grave and threw three handfuls of earth towards the head of the dead man.
Ibn Majah transmitted it.

*** This too is copied from the traditions of the JEWS ***

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 2154        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas
One of the Prophet's companions set up his tent over a grave without realising that it was a grave, and it contained a man who was reciting the surah, "Blessed is He in whose hand is the kingdom," up to the end.  He went and told the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said, "It is the defender; it is the protector which is protecting him from Allah's punishment."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.

*** Not only Muhammad could HEAR the DEAD in their grave, but so could some of his companions ***

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 5352        Narrated byAbuSa'id
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out to the prayer and saw the people looking as if they were grinning he said, "If you were to keep much in remembrance death which is the cutter-off of pleasures, it would distract you from what I see. Keep much in remembrance death which is the cutter-off of pleasure, for a day does not come to the grave without its saying, 'I am the house of exile, I am the house of solitude, I am the house of dust, I am the house of worms.' When a believer dies the grave says to him, 'Welcome and greeting; you are indeed the dearest to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.' It will then expand for him as far as the eye can see and a door to Paradise will be opened for him.

But when the profligate or infidel is buried the grave says to him, `No welcome and no greeting to you; you are the most hateful to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.' AbuSa'id told that Allah's Messenger indicated it by interlacing his fingers. Then he said, "Seventy dragons will be put in charge of him of such a nature that if one of them were to breathe on the earth it would produce no crops as long as the world lasted, and they will bite and scratch him till he is brought to the reckoning." He also reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying. "The grave is one of the gardens of Paradise, or one of the pits of Hell."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.

Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 2114        Narrated byFadalah ibn Ubayd
Thumamah ibn Shafayy reported: When we were with Fadalah ibn Ubayd in the country of the Romans at a place (known as) Rudis, a friend of ours died.  Fadalah ibn Ubayd ordered to prepare a grave for him and then it was levelled; and then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanding (us) to level the grave.

Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 6859        Narrated byZayd ibn Thabit
As Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) was going with us towards the dwellings of Banu an-Najjar. While riding his pony, it shied and he nearly fell off. He found four, five or six graves there.  He said: Which of you knows about those lying in the graves?  Someone said: I do. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: In what state did they die?  He said: They died as polytheists.  He said: These people are passing through the ordeal in the graves. If it were not for the fact that you would stop burying (your dead) in the graves if you heard the torment in the grave, which I hear, I should have certainly made you listen to it.  Then turning his face towards us, he said: Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.  They said: We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.  He said: Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave.  They said: We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave.  He said: Seek refuge with Allah from turmoil, its visible and invisible (aspects).  They said: We seek refuge with Allah from turmoil and its visible and invisible aspects.  He said: Seek refuge with Allah from the turmoil of the Dajjal.  They said: We seek refuge Allah from the turmoil of the Dajjal.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah   Fiqh 4.89b    The Questioning in the Grave
All ahl al-Sunnah wa Al-Jama'ah agree that each person will be questioned after his death, whether he is buried or not. Even if a person were eaten by carnivorous animals or bumt to ashes and thrown into the air or drowned in the sea, he or she would be questioned about his or her deeds, and rewarded with good or evil depending on his or her deeds in life. Both the body and the soul together experience punishment or reward.

Ibn al-Qayyim said, "The early Muslim community and its prominent scholars held that after death, a person is either in bliss or torment both physically and spiritually. After its separation from the body, the soul endures a state of happiness or punishment. At times, when the soul rejoins the body, both of them receive torture or joy. On the Day of Resurrection, the souls will be returned to the bodies and they will rise from their graves and stand before the Lord of the worlds. The Muslims, Christians, and Jews, all believe in the resurrection of the body.

Al-Maruzi related that Imam Ahmad said, "The punishment in the grave is a reality, and only he who is misguided or wants to misguide others denies it."

Hanbal said, "I asked Abu Abdallah about the punishment in the grave. He said, 'These are the sound hadith and we believe in them and affirm them. We affirm everything that comes from the Prophet, peace be upon him, with a sound chain of narrators. If we were to confirm a report as being from the Prophet, peace be upon him, and then reject it or oppose it, we would be denying the Word of Allah, "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it".'  I asked him, 'Is the punishment of the grave a reality?' He said, 'Yes, it is a reality. The people are punished in their graves. ' I heard Abu Abdallah saying, 'We believe in the punishment of the grave, in Munkar and Nakir (the two questioning angels), and that the deceased will be questioned in their graves.' The Qur'an states that 'Allah will establish in strength those who believe in the Word, that stands firm in this world and in the Hereafter,'  Qur'an 14.27 that is, in the grave."

Ahmad ibn al-Qasim said, I asked, 'O Abu Abdallah! Do you believe in Munkar andNakir and what is related conceming the punishment of the grave? ' He said, 'Glory to Allah.Yes, we do confirm that and we declare so.'I said, 'This expression that you use, is it Munkar and Nakir? Or do you call them, "The two angels?"' He answered: 'Munkar and Nakir.'I said, 'They say, "There is no mention of Munkar and Nakir in the hadith".' He replied, 'Of course there is. There is Munkar and Nakir'."

Al-Hafiz said in Al-Fath, "Ahmad ibn Hazm and Ibn Hubairah are of the opinion that the questioning is addressed to the soul only, without its returning to the body. The majority of Muslim scholars, however, disagree with them. They say, 'The soul is returned to the body or some of it, as is confirmed by the hadith. Had the punishment been directed at the soul only, there would not be concern for the body. The scattered parts of a body should pose no problem, for Allah is able to give life to any part of a body, and then address the questioning to that particular part. Likewise, He is able to gather all its parts easily'."

Those who hold that the questioning will be addressed only to the soul say that if one were to examine the body in the grave at the time of the questioning, one will notice no trace of its sitting or any other movement. One will also notice that the grave is neither more narrow nor spacious. Similar is the case of those who are not buried in any grave, e.g., the people who are crucified. To counter this objection, it is maintained that it is not impossible. Rather, in physical life we find a similar example, namely, sleeping. A sleeping person experiences both pleasure and pain, but his companion cannot notice any of its effects on him. In fact, even a person who is wide awake also feels pain and pleasure when he hears or thinks of his painful or pleasant experiences, but its effects cannot be noticed. Considering the unseen in the light of what is seen or guessing about life after death in terms of the present life is the mistake of this fallacious thinking.

Obviously Allah has screened the sights and sounds of the other world from man, and with our limited physical faculties, we are incapable of perceiving the vast kingdom of heavens, unless Allah wills it.

The opinion of the majority in this respect is supported by various hadith. The Prophet, peace be upon him, for example, told us, "the deceased hears the sound of their footsteps"; "his ribs are altered because of the embrace of the grave"; "the sound of his voice resounds when the angel strikes him with a hammer"; "he is struck between his ears," or "they (the two angels) will cause him to sit up." All these hadith refer to various bodily conditions. We will mention here some of the sound hadith concerning this subject.

Zaid ibn Thabit reported, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, was going with us toward the dwellings of Banu an-Najjar. He was riding a pony, which spooked and he nearly fell off. He found four, five, or six graves there, and asked, 'Which of you knows about those lying in these graves?' Someone said, ' I do . ' Thereupon the Prophet, peace be upon him, asked, ' In what state did they die? ' He replied, 'They died as polytheists. ' He said, "These people are passing through an ordeal in the graves. You would stop burying your dead in the graves if you heard the torment in the grave that I hear. If it were not for this fact, I should have certainly made you listen to it.' Then turning his face toward us, he admonished, 'Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.' They replied, 'We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.' He said, 'Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave.' They said, 'We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave. ' He warned, 'Seek refuge with Allah from temptations both visible and invisible.' They replied, 'We seek refuge with Allah from temptation (fitnah) in every visible and invisible form.' Then he added, 'Seek refuge with Allah from the temptation of the Dajjal.' They said, 'We seek refuge with Allah from the temptation of the Dajjal'.''  (Muslim)

Qatadah reported that Anas ibn Malik said, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'When a human is laid in his grave and his companions return and he hears their footsteps, two angels will come to him and make him sit and ask him, "What did you say about this man, Muhammad, may peace be upon him?" He will say, "I testify that he is Allah's servant and His Messenger." Then it will be said to him, "Look at your place in Hell-Fire. Allah has exchanged for you a place in Paradise instead of it".' The Prophet, peace be upon him, added, 'The dead person will see both his places. As for a non-believer or a hypocrite, he will respond to the angels, "I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say ! " It will be said to him, "Neither did you know nor did you seek guidance from those who had knowledge." Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by all except human beings and jinns'." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Al-Bara ibn 'Azib reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'When a Muslim is questioned in his grave, he bears witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' According to one report, the verse, 'Allah will establish in strength those who believe with the Word, that stands firm in this world and in the Hereafter' (Qur'an 14.27) was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave. The deceased will be asked, 'Who is your Lord?' He will say, 'Allah is my Lord and Muhammad is my Prophet.' That is what is meant by the statement of Allah, 'Allah will make firm those who believe with a firm statement in this life and in the hereafter'." (Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Sunan)

Ahmad and Abu Hatim reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "When a deceased person is laid in his grave, he hears the sound of the footsteps of people as they go away. If he is a believer, the prayer will stand by his head, the fasting will be to his right, alms to his left, and all other good deeds of charity, kindness to relations, and good behavior will be by his feet. The deceased will be questioned by the angels at his head. The prayer will say, 'There is no entrance through me.' Then he will be questioned by his right side where fasting will say, 'There is no entrance through me.' Then he will be questioned by his left side where charity will say, 'There is no entrance through me.' Then he will be questioned by his feet where the good acts of voluntary charity, kindness to relations, and good behavior will say, 'There is no entrance through me.' Then they will say to him, 'Get up.'And he will get up. The sun will appear to him and it will begin to set. Then they will ask, 'This man who was among you, what do you say about him? What is your testimony about him?' The man will say, 'Let me pray.' The angels will say, 'You will pray. Answer our question. What do you think about this man who was among you? What do you say concerning him? What do you testify concerning him?' The deceased will say, I bear witness that Muhammad was the Messenger of Allah who brought the truth from Allah.' The deceased will be told, 'According to this you lived, died, and according to this you will be resurrected, if Allah wills.'

"Then a door to Paradise will be opened for him. He will be told, 'This is your place in Paradise and what Allah has prepared for you. ' At this the desire and happiness of the deceased will increase. His grave will be enlarged 70 arms-length and his grave will be lit up. His body will change to his original form and his spirit will be placed in a bird dangling by the trees of Paradise in a nice breeze." The Prophet, peace be upon him, added, "That is what is meant by the statement of Allah, 'Allah will establish in strength those who believe with the Word that stands firm, in this world and in the Hereafter'." He also mentioned the unbeliever and said, "His grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together. About this the Qur'an says, 'Verily, for him is a narrow life and We will resurrect him blind on the Day of Resurrection'.'' Qur'an 20.124

Al-Tahawi reported from Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "A person was ordered to be lashed a hundred times in his grave. He continuously asked Allah to decrease his punishment until only one lash remained. His grave was totally filled by fire. When the fire was removed, he regained consciousness and asked, 'Why was I lashed?' He was told, 'You offered a prayer once without proper purification, and you passed by an oppressed person but you did not help him'."

Anas reported, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, once heard a voice from a grave. He asked, 'When did this one die?' They said, 'He died during the pre-Islamic era.' He was pleased to hear that and remarked, 'Had I not feared that you would stop burying your dead, I would have asked Allah to let you hear the punishment of the grave'." (Reported by Nasa'i and Muslim)
'Abdallah ibn 'Umar reported, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'This is (Sa'd ibn Mu'adh), for whom the Throne (of Allah) moved. The doors of Heaven were opened for him and seventy thousand angels participated (in his funeral prayer). (His grave) was compressed and later on was expanded for him'.''  (Nasa'i)
